The SmallRig RA-D85 3586 is a parabolic softbox designed for photography, video recording, live streaming, vlogging, news reporting, wedding photography, and commercial productions. The diameter of the softbox when unfolded is 84 cm, which is worth considering when planning your setup in a smaller studio. The design features 16 ribs, a highly reflective interior, two diffusers, and a grid, allowing you to achieve soft, even, and more easily controllable light. The universal Bowens mount ensures compatibility with, among others, the SmallRig RC 120D, RC 120B, RC 220D, and RC 220B lights, as well as other light sources that use this standard.

Quick Setup and Take-Down

The RA-D85 uses a quick-mount mechanism in which the softbox cover and its frame form an integrated structure. The system is designed so that setting up and folding the softbox requires only pressing and lifting the appropriate component, making lighting setup simpler and eliminating the need for time-consuming assembly of individual ribs.

Durable Construction and Even Light Reflection

The softbox is made of Oxford fabric and an aluminum alloy, combining a flexible cover with a lightweight and durable frame structure. The interior surface is coated with a highly reflective finish that helps direct light evenly onto the diffuser surface while preserving the color temperature and CRI properties of the light source used. The structure is supported by 16 flexible ribs that are resistant to high temperatures and repeated folding, which helps maintain the softbox’s proper shape during regular use.

Parabolic Shape and Refined Rib Mounting

The use of 16 ribs ensures a regular, nearly circular shape and adequate depth, which helps achieve a more even light distribution. The ribs are positioned on the outer side of the structure, so they do not obscure the inner reflective coating and do not interfere with light reflection inside the softbox. This design also ensures that the structural elements are more securely attached to the Velcro straps and do not come loose easily during assembly, disassembly, or transport.

Two diffusers and a grid for greater control

The set includes two diffuser materials—an inner and an outer one—that allow you to adjust the degree of light softening to suit a specific shot. Using both layers produces softer and more even lighting, while the proper configuration of the diffusers allows for greater light transmission when the scene requires it. The included honeycomb grid limits the light spread angle to approximately 45°, making it easier to direct the light toward the subject and reduce unwanted background lighting.
